The New Google Maps Alert May Make Taxis Safer / Google

Driving in a taxi is a pretty standard way to get around, but the fact of the matter is that a lot of people, women in particular, often feel unsafe in taxis especially if the cab is unregulated which is the case in a lot of countries around the world.

The main danger that you would face in a taxi is that the driver might take you off your route without you realizing it and potentially put you in a dangerous situation. This is particularly likely in countries that you might be visiting, countries that are unfamiliar to you. The routes in these places are going to be brand new, and a malicious taxi driver might try to take advantage of that.

Google Maps has come out with an alert that is going to make travelling in a taxi much safer for everyone. This alert is going to notify you if the vehicle you are in is going off the optimal route by more than 500 meters. If you get this alert you can inform the driver that you know the car is off course, and chances are that they will steer back to the optimal route again.

This can also prevent taxi drivers from overcharging you by taking you via a route that is intentionally longer than it needs to be for the purpose of increasing the fare that you will be charged at the end of the ride. You can just put in the pickup and drop off destination into the app and Google Maps will quickly alert you if the course that the taxi is taking is unfamiliar.
